Rockdale City Council members, meeting in regular session Monday at City Hall canceled half the May 2 city election.

That would be the east ward where incumbent Denise Holmes-Wallace is unopposed for another term.

There is a west ward race with Lin Perry and Monique Gebhart vying for the seat being vacated by Doug Calame.

USDA—The council approved applying before the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture for a grant to fund a new water treatment plant.

Rockdale has already been approved for over $27-million in loans and grants from the Texas Water Development Board in connection with its water and sewer projects.

The council also okayed applying for a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant of at least $3.1-million which would provide substantial drainage improvements in a number of flood-prone areas.

In other business the council:

• Heard Rockdale Earth Day Committee Chair Dave Melton report Earth Day has assumed control of the suspended Yard of the Month program and will make awards for six months in the year beginning in April. Nominations must be received before the loth of the preceding month at rockdaleearthday@yahoo.com.

• Okayed a “no major issues” audit report from Donald Allman CPA.

• Delayed awarding a bid on an IT services contract until information more to the council’s liking can be submitted at subsequent meeting.

• Approved a request from hotel-motel occupancy (HOT) tax funds, requested by Pete Rubio III on behalf of the Rockdale Girls Softball League which will host the 2020 Texas Teenage Softball Association Tour-ney for 15-and-under girls in July.

• Heard MDD Executive Director Kara Clore report on an honor received by the district as she was asked to be present earlier this month when Gov. Greg Abbott accepted the Governor’s Cup (economic development) for the eighth consecutive year.

• Approved a Planning-Zoning Board recommendation for variances at 2004 West Cameron.
