City council members rejected a bid to lease the former Rockdale city landfill off County Road 323, southeast of town, Monday after several area residents spoke in opposition to “a shooting range” at the site.

But City Manager Chris Whittaker said he had no knowledge of any shooting range planned for the property.

And City Secretary Terry Blanchard said the bid from Chester and Louise Darcy—the only one received by the city—specified the property would be used as a “wildlife management area.”

Whittaker said the city doesn’t know how the shooting range talk started.

The proposal asked for a 20-year lease at $300 per year.

Blanchard said the council was required to vote on Monday night.

The council said it would revisit the matter at a later date.

SECOND READING—

The council gave second, and final, reading approval to increasing the homestead exemption for disabled and 65-and-older residents from $5,000 to $10,000.

The increase was approved in March but required two readings to enact.

In other business Monday, they hired a custodial service for the new police department and agreed to hire a student for a summer marketing internship.
