Meeting in regular session Monday by teleconference, the Rockdale City Council proposed a 90.74 tax rate for 2020-2021.
That’s a decrease from the current 91.18.
Holly said the proposed rate will be adopted “or changed” at the council’s next monthly meeting Sept. 14.
The council, after learning 69 persons had compiled $22,000 in unpaid water bills since restrictions were eased due to the COVID-19 crisis, authorized Holly to make disconnections if payment plans are not worked out.
Also during Monday’s meeting the council approved funds from the hotel-motel tax (HOT) for use by visitor centers, $20,000 for the Chamber of Commerce and $10,000 for the I&GN Depot Museum.
Roddam selected new member of POSGCD
Ward Roddam, longtime Rockdale resident, and current fire chief, was appointed the newest member of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District.
He replaces Chris Whittaker, who has moved from Rockdale.
County Judge Steve Young said Ronald Rushing also applied for the position.
Hospital board delays tax rate vote to later
Members of the Rockdale Hospital District board of directors were to have met Friday to set a tax rate for 2020-21 but did not have a quorum, according to Karolyn Puccio, board president.
Puccio told The Reporter she believes the board will “vote for no increase” when it meets at a later date.
Current rate is 6.5-cents.
The RHD had originally said a 16.9-cent rate would be necessary to support the CHI St. Joseph-HealthPoint Clinic, but decided to set a lower rate using reserve funds.
In November, voters will go to the polls to decide whether to expand the hospital district boundaries to those of the Rockdale Independent School District.
If successful that change should lessen the tax burden on city residents.
Schedules listed for food pantry and thrift shop
August schedules for the Rockdale Christian Services Food Pantry and Heavenly Treasures thrift shop have been announced, according to Pam Warren, RCS chair.
The food pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to 12-noon on Thursday Aug. 13 and Friday, Aug. 27.
She said clients may pick up their commodity boxes on either of those days.
“Distribution will continue as a walk-up model,” she said. “Clients are not permitted in the building.”
Warren said RCS does not have the volunteer staff to assist clients with placing food in vehicles.
“We do, however, provide a cart, so if you need help in getting food to your car, please bring someone with you.
