Milam County Judge Steve Young happened upon some money last week, and the commissioners voted to use it for renovations to the Milam County Professional Building at the Monday morning meeting of the Milam County Commissioners Court in the courthouse in Cameron.
The complex has three buildings, but currently the north and central buildings are getting the commissioners’ attention.
He found $178,584.74 with the help of Danica Laura, the county auditor, and is from the unclaimed capital funds from the state, he said.
“This is money that comes from electrical coops that lose contact with customers,” he said.
It has to be used for things that fall in at least one of the following categories:
• Economic development;
• For small business;
• To stimulate, encourage and develop business location and commercial activity in the county;
• To promote or advertise the county and its vicinity or conduct a solicitation program to attack conventions, visitors and businesses;
• To improve the extent to which women and minority businesses are awarded county contracts;
• To support comprehensive literacy programs for the benefit of county residents; or
• For the encouragement, promotion, improvement and application of the arts.
“Is this economic development? Well, of course, it is,” he said. “This is clearly a small business.”
Before the vote he told commissioners the building renovation would be a good place to dedicate the new-found funds.
“I think this is something we ought to do. If we don’t use it for this it will just sit there,” Young said.
