CAMERON—A motion to place a proposed move of county offices from downtown Cameron to the town’s former hospital building died for lack of a second Monday in commissioners court.

Pct. 2 Commissioner Donald Shuffield made a motion to place the issue before voters in the November general election after saying he had received numerous complaints against the move.

Shuffield said he did not believe the former Little River-Cameron Hospital building is large enough for expansion and does not have a space for a courtroom.

He also objected to the project’s cost, which is not yet fully known

County Judge Steve Young, a supporter of the move said the county decided to borrow money for the project instead of going for a bond issue. He said that decision was made by the commissioners court last October.

Young said the county has spent about $100,000 in obtaining plans which he noted were about 75 percent complete.

Young said current county debt on the jail and purchase of voting machines will be retired in 2024.

“There’s an escape clause and we can get out of it (the obligation to repurpose the hospital building) if the price is too much,” he said.

GRADING—Two council visitors, Jason Talley and Michael Fulton said they would donate labor and equipment to maintain some county roads in Precinct 2.

Commissioner Shuffield said his precinct would continue to maintain the roads .

Commissioners voted to table the issue to allow Shuffield to meet with Talley and Fulton and come up with a solution to present at the next commissioners court meeting.

In other business Monday, commissioners:

• Recognized The Rock-dale Reporter and The Cameron Herald for their dedication to providing news coverage in the county.

• Okayed a reinvestment zone for the former HEB Building in Rockdale for JELD Holding. The Rock-dale City Council has also okayed that designation.

• Ordered the May 2 primaries and designated early voting spots as Hogan-Hall Building at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce—that’s a change from previous elections—County Clerk’s Office in Cameron, Buckholts Town Hall and the Thorndale VFW.
