CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners on Tuesday decided on a split vote to seek a Texas constitutional amendment to change the office of treasurer from elected to appointed.
Pct. 2 Commissioner Donald Shuffield raised the issue citing “what’s been going on in the past, here and other counties.”
Donna Orsag resigned the post after being charged with tampering with evidence. Linda Acosta was subsequently elected.
Shuffield referenced qualifications for the position in seeking the change to an appointed treasurer. “If Linda decides not to run and I run, and I’m the only one running, I can get it and you don’t want me in there,” he said.
Shuffield said if the position is changed to appointed, commissioners have some control.
If they don’t do the job, we can get somebody else in there,” he said.
Shuffield’s motion to seek a constitutional amendment passed 3-2. Voting in favor were Shuffield, Pct. 1 Commissioner Richard “Opey” Watkins and Pct. 2 C0mmissioner Jeff Muegge. County Judge Dave Barkemeyer and Pct. 3 Commissioner John Fisher voted against.
If approved by the state, the question is expected to be on the next general election ballot.
In other business, commissioners endorsed de-annexation of the Lower Brushy Creek Water Control and Improvement District.
