CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners closed out their “big swap” in a regular session Monday morning and now they have several tense weeks of waiting to see if the county will get a key grant.
Commissioners, in a series of votes, approved the exchange of buildings housing county offices— appraised at $1.276-million—for the former Little River-Cameron Hospital complex—appraised at $1.32 million.
County Judge Steve Young said the county hopes to pay for the multi-million-dollar renovation of the building into county offices with a $5.5-million infrastructure grant from the federal Economic Development Administration (EDA).
Young said the county’s application is complete and the EDA will review it on Aug. 28.
“We should know by Sept. 1 if we get the grant or not,” he said. Young said there is a

“Spend $1-million to get $5-million. I’ll do that every day of the week,” Young said.
He has repeatedly noted even if the county does not receive the grant taxes will not be raised to pay for the renovation.
URGENT CARE—The former Professional Center on the hospital is being renovated with Cares Act (COVID-19 mitigation funds) to serve as an urgent care facility.
Milam County is receiving over $600,000 from the Cares Act.
Commissioners approved a lease agreement with Nurse-Practitioner Danielle Janicek for the facility, which is to be open after hours and on weekends.
