Milam County commissioners took a “leap of faith” at a Tuesday meeting in the courthouse when they voted to continue progress on the renovation of the Professional Building.

The leap of faith was necessary because the county applied for a grant to do the work, but don’t know if they will get the grant, the judge said.

“We have to step out there on a leap of faith. The worst thing they could do is say, ‘Sorry, Charlie, we can’t give you the money’,” he said before the vote. “If we had to borrow the money we could, I just don’t want to.”

Before the vote, Young told commissioners “this is not something to take lightly.

“We can go forward or forget about it.”

Young said he remains confident that the money will come through and the commission back his optimism with a unanimous vote to move forward.

He explained that building in question is on about 8.5 acres of land about two miles from the courthouse.

It is a part of the former Little River Hospital complex. The county traded some property it owned in downtown Cameron for the campus where the Professional Building is.

The work on the building complex has already started that is being funded with COVID-19 funds most of which have to be spent on things directly related to the fight against COVID-19.

A large part of the Professional Building restoration is to use it as a medical center which fits the criteria, he said.

“This will some day be where we put our medical department,” he told commissioners.

The commissioners also voted to:

• Proclaim October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

• Authorize the country grant program for home delivered meals.

• Allow the Milam County Health Department to use and question the state’s count of COVID-19 deaths.
