Milam County in partnership with internet provider Zochnet in Giddings has filed a grant application with the National Telecommunications and Information Agency.
The government and private application hopes to get funding to bring broadband internet service to the county.
“What we have in this county is wireless internet. We have very little fiber,” Milam County Judge Steve Young said at last week’s commissioner’s meeting.
“We are far below the minimum definition of what they (FCC) call qualifying broad band service,” he said.
Getting the grant would be a step in bringing the county up to fast internet speed, he said.
The median speed in the county is 10 download to 2 upload. Fiber would take the county’s internet speed to 1,000 download and upload.
