Milam County commissioners will hold a public hearing July 26 concerning the creation of an investment zone for two solar energy concerns with interest of creating solar energy farms in the county.
John Redington, a lawyer with Allison, Bass and Magee in Austin, told the commissioners about the solar energy projects before the vote.
“We’ve got four pretty large solar projects that are set to be heard in a public hearing on June 28,” he reminded commissioners.
“We have just gotten two more applications. These are a bit smaller projects,” he said. “The first one is the BT Jungman project. It is going to be off of 2269 up in Precinct 2 and it is about a 250-acre projected solar farm. It should be a capital investment of around $50 million and it is going to bring in a lot of construction jobs and then once it is done it should be at least one full-time job to the county and they are asking for a tax abatement.
“The second one is the Grandsolar Texas One. It is a little bit larger project. This is down in Commissioner (Jeff) Mugge’s precinct, Precinct 4, and it’s about a 35o-acre project which could bring about $88 million, I believe, in capital investments. So both these projects could really help the tax base and the school districts and the other taxing entities,” he said.
The public hearings will be held in the courthouse as part of the county commissioner court meeting agenda.
County Judge Steve Young also told commissioners that the work on the new county annex in the old hospital building is under way.
“We finally started the renovation last Monday,” Young said.
He thanked the people who had been at the site cleaning up for the past two weeks to get the buildings ready for the renovation work.
“It is going to be a team effort to get this done,” he said. “Where we are now is they are doing this in phases, but as you know they are going to take everything out of that building. I mean it’ll be to the bare walls.”
But the long road ahead will end in a shining new facility for the county, he noted.
“When we get through with this, we are all going to be so proud of that. Everybody is going to have a nice place to work. You are going to be proud to come to work and you are going to be pleased with your facilities,” he said.
Not only will it look good, but it is going to help county residents do business with the county.
“It is going to be quick, it’s going to be convenient. Everybody will be in the same place and they are going to be proud of what they see. They are going to be proud that Milam County has a nice administrative place to do their business,” he said. “So I am very pleased about all this and, by the way, most of it is grant money so that makes it even better.”
The county is continuing its vaccination program and on June 10 vaccinated 30 students under the county’s new student vaccination incentive plan.
Thursday’s clinic will be in Rockdale and Friday there will be one in Thorndale.
