Milam County commissioners Monday agreed to Sheriff Mike Clore’s application for a grant from the governor’s office to get equipment to help the county’s criminal intervention project.

Before the vote at the court’s regular meeting in the courthouse, Clore told members what the grant would fund.

“We put in for a couple of vehicles for our interdiction team, the interdiction team is basically looking for narcotics and illegal activities on our highways and roadways,” he said.

He said the program would likely receive about $60,000, so he won’t get two vehicles, only one, but hopefully will be able to get other equipment such as a license reader to help catch suspects.

County Judge Steve Young told the commissioners before the vote that this was a needed thing and would not cost the county any money.

Young gave a progress report on the work at the old hospital site in Cameron.

EBCO, the contractor selected to do the upgrades to the county property that once housed the Little River Hospital, has drafted a contract which was sent to the Economic Development Association on May 3 for approval.

As of May 10, the county has not heard from EDA.

The Milam County Health Task Force also met for the first time and Collier Perry was selected as chairman of the group.

The committee will next meet May 11 to interview AMR and PHI about ways to enhance ambulance service in the county.

The county Precincts 3 and 4 entered into and interlocal agreement with the City of Rockdale. The agreement will allow Rockdale to provide an adequate supply of water for maintenance on county roads in Precincts 3 and 4, and also provide an acceptable location to store county owned road materials such as cold mix, road base, gravel and asphalt.

For the county’s part, it will provide road materials to be used on city streets, including, but not limited to, county roads that extend into and/or through the city limits of Rockdale.

According to the document “the city of Rockdale and Milam County Precincts 3 and 4 hereby agree to assist each other in special public projects through the use of equipment and supplies to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the citizens of the city of Rockdale and Milam County Precincts 3 and 4.”

The commissioners’ next meeting is set for May 24 at 10 a.m. in the courthouse at Cameron.
