Milam County recorded its first highway fatality of 2019 when a Killeen woman died Monday, a day and a half after a two-vehicle collision south of Milano.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Vanessa Harrison died at 10:28 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan.

She had been transported there by AMR ambulance from the scene of a 9:17 collision on Texas 36 south of the intersection with Milam County Road 240.

Trooper Joshua Hendricks listed Harrison as the driver of a southbound 2018 Chevrolet Sonic.

He said the driver attempted to pass another southbound vehicle and was in a head-on collision with a northbound 2001 Ford pickup.

Driver of the pickup was listed as 64-year-old Alfred Montalvo of San Benito.

Montalvo was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple by an AMR ambulance crew.

There was no word on his condition at presstime Monday.

Both vehicles were totaled.

Hendricks said both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Texas 36 was blocked while emergency crews worked to free the victims.

In addition to the Department of Public Safety, the Milam County Sheriff’s Department and Milano Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
