CAMERON—The “Junkyard Saga” continued Monday as Milam County Commissioners continued to grapple with strategy on dealing with a declared junkyard in the 1300 block of East Cameron Avenue (US
79) in Rockdale.
Owner Richie Thrasher remains in the Milam County Jail after being arrested June 4 on 13 counts of bond surrender/bond forfeiture on an original charge of maintaining a junkyard.
Thursday, Thrasher was indicted by a Milam County Grand Jury for bail jumping/failure to appear. (See page 6A).
SCRAP—County Judge Steve Young noted Monday that county’s plan has been to sell scrap from the site to raised money to clean it up, noting that even that strategy probably would not recover all the funds needed.
But Young said some of the scrap has apparently been moved to what he characterized as “an illegal dump” on at 22-acre tract on County Road 323.
“They’ve been moving off what I guess they think is more valuable,” he said.
Young said the county is hoping to stop that action and an injunction notice to “cease and desist” those actions has been sent.
The judge also mentioned obtaining an inter-local agreement with the City of Rockdale.
Young termed the property “drug infested,” saying he did not believe drugs were being sold there but were being used heavily on the property.
COUNTY MOVE—Commissioners continued to discuss a plan to move Milam County offices from downtown Cameron to the former Little River-Cameron Hospital.
Judge Young said he met with architect Stan Graves earlier this month and Graves has toured the hospital building and taken measurements of the facility and each office.
Young said the county is awaiting plans to be prepared.
Little River closed all its facilities last year, including the Rockdale and Cameron hospitals, along with its clinics
It was noted that, after county offices move, the Milam County Train Museum in downtown Cameron would move into the current Juvenile Probation office.
Volunteer Jamie Larson noted the railroad museum had up to 2,000 visitors last year.,
In other business, commissioners:
• Tabled Dr., Stuart Yoffe’s request to become a Milam County employee.
• Tabled a public nuisance abatement order.
