The Milam County Child Protective Services Board is requesting help to sponsor a child for Christmas. According to Chairman Jeanie Weed, “the number of abused and neglected children in state conservatorship (Foster Care and Kinship Care) has increased once again this year, especially with the economic downturn.”

The organization is a sk ing for sponsors for each chi ld who will be willing to spend $125 or more to provide gifts for the Christmas holidays. By signing up you will be given a child’s first name, age, and a wish list that has been compiled by a foster parent or caseworker. Participants may do the shopping or CPS will do it for you.

“All of our children have suffered emotional abuse. Many have suffered physical and sexual abuse. All have been rejected by the people who should have protected and loved them,” Weed added. “Please help us to provide as pleasant a Christmas as possible for our children.”

If you are unable to sponsor a child, CPS would appreciate any monetary donation toward the care of the children. All donations go into a fund and are used to prov ide Chr istmas for the children in cons ervatorships throughout the year.

To participate or to get a sponsorship form, contact Weed at 512-446-2776, Vice-Chairman Cathy Westbrook at 979218-7592, Treasurer Rachel Owens at 512429-1336 or Secretary Kim Westbrook at 432-940-7653.

Lastly, Weed said, “Childhood should not hurt! Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime, but so does love.”
