Rockdale Earth Day held a day of service on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. The day’s events got kicked off at the RHS gymnasium with breakfast tacos provided by the Rockdale Rotary Club. Mayor John King read his Earth Day proclamation and then everyone was bussed to locations around the city to get started on beautification e ff o r t s .
On hand for the event were (L-R) RHS Principal Brent Hasselbach, Liz Milam, Tatiana Olivares, Rey Mata, Melissa Barcuch, Mayor King, Ann King, Esmeralda Olivares, Rockdale Earth Day Chairman David Melton and County Judge Steve Young.
A line of cars and trucks full of trash stretched from the rodeo arena at Fair Park all the way to 487 on Saturday morning at the city’s Stash Your Trash event. In case you missed this event or were turned away when the skiffs were full, City Manager Barbara Holly said, there will be a curbside trash pickup on July 13 and another Stash Your Trash event on Sept. 10.
City workers unloaded all of the trash from citizens’ vehicles. The amount of trash brought to the Stash your Trash event filled seven 40-yard dumpsters with trash, diverted two more dumpsters worth of limbs to the sewer plant to be chipped and turned into mulch, and let latecomers dump at the Mill Street Yard until it too was filled to capacity.
