It’s time to pick a mayor, two city council members and decide a contested school board race. There shouldn’t be any confusion where to vote. Both city and school district residents will cast ballots at City Hall between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Milano voters will pick a mayor and unravel contested city and school contests. And Rockdale city voters will approve or reject a couple of amendments to the city charter. There were 221 city and 57 school district ballots cast during the early voting period which ended Tuesday. ROCKDALE—In the premier race on Saturday’s ballot, Mayor John King is challenged by Neil Switkowski. King is seeking his third term. Both city council elections are contested. In the east ward, three-term incumbent Joyce Dalley is challenged by Michelle Larkin.
West ward incumbent Nathan Bland, who is seeking his third term, has drawn an opponent in Belinda Hillhouse.
City of Rockdale voters will be asked to add a sentence to one section of the city charter, and remove one in another section on May 4.
The addition would clarify recall procedures for council members, specifying that recalls from voters in one ward can’t “cross the boundary line” and apply to members on the other ward.
Removal of words from a different section would allow a council member to be appointed to another “city offi ce.”
The entire ballot language was printed in the April 11 and 18 Reporters, prior to the start of early voting.
SCHOOL BOARD— There are actually three school board positions to be decided but only one is contested.
Amy Ogea-Casas and Jillian McEntarffer are vying for the Place 3 position being vacated by Michelle Lehmkuhl.
Lehmkuhl, a former board president and vice-president, did not file for re-election. She has served four terms.
Unopposed are two incumbents, Charles Miles in Place 4 and Wenda Dyer in Place 5.
CAN YOU VOTE?—The yellow voting card you used to cast a ballot in the 2018 elections is still in force this year.
To find out if you are eligible to vote in the Rock-dale city election turn it over and look at the boxes on the back.
Under “city” if it says “RKDE” or “RKDW” you are in the city limits and may vote in the city election.
Both designations will vote for mayor. RKDE votes in the east ward and RKDW in the west ward.
Under “school” if it says “RKDI” you’re a resident in the Rockdale Independent School District and may vote for all three positions on the school board ballot.
