A Milam County Deputy Sheriff was a driver in a tw0-vehicle crash which claimed the life of a prominent Cameron civic leader last week in that city.
Few details are being released by the Department of Public Safety, pending completion of an investigation.
Rev. Earnest Taylor, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene, Fourth Street (Texas 36/US 190) in Cameron near the Milam Plaza shopping center.
The Department of Public Safety did not identify the deputy but Cameron media reported the driver of the patrol unit was Deputy Michael Heath.
Cameron, police and firefighters, along with local DPS, were called to the scene at 9:37 p.m. last Wednesday (May 2).
It was reported Taylor’s pickup had pulled into the highway when it was in a broadside collision with the deputy’s patrol unit.
Both Taylor’s wife Shirley, 75, and the deputy were treated at Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Temple.
Mrs. Taylor’s condition was initially listed as “serious.”
NO NAME—Milam County DPS told The Reporter they did not have any details on the collision and referred questions to DPS Sgt. Dave Roberts.
Roberts told The Reporter Monday no more details would be forthcoming from them until a DPS crash team “has completed their investigation.”
He said because the incident involved a government vehicle, a team of troopers with special training are working the case.
LEADER—Rev. Taylor was a longtime pastor of Cameron Grove Baptist Church and former president of the local NAACP branch.
He also founded Cameron’s Blessings from God Food Bank.
