The Rockdale ISD Board of trustees met for the first time this decade last Wednesday and heard Assistant Supt. Pam Kaufmann present a report on first semester discipline.

Board members also discussed class rankings at RHS and approved the trustee election scheduled for May 2.

TREND—Kaufmann’s presentation showed that all four campuses have primarily seen decreases in discipline referrals and placements in alternative settings.

She did note the junior high has seen its number of referrals go from 105 to 169, the number of combined out-of-school suspensions and in-school suspensions dropped from 154 to 94 this school year.

According to administrators, this indicates many students are not continuing bad behavior since both forms of suspension are typically the result of multiple referrals and punishment for what is considered more disruptive behavior.

The intermediate school has also seen a drop of in-schools suspensions from 51 to nine.

Kaufmann also noted the schools attribute the positive correlation with the implementation of programs like Capturing Kids Hearts. CKH puts emphasis on strengthening the bond between the teacher and the students in their classroom.

RANK—Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo also had a discussion with trustees reviewing current practices on reporting class rank for RHS students.

Near the end of each semester, the school releases rankings for every student at all four grade levels.

The board considered options such as limiting class rankings for ninth and 10th grades to gear younger students more towards building skills for life after their time at RHS.

BALLOT—Trustees approved the School Trustee Election Order and Notice for an election for May 2, including sharing common polling locations with the City of Rockdale and the Rockdale Hospital District.

Trustees also approved updates to the RISD School Board policies which provide guidelines for public participation in their meetings. Changes made included deleting a time limit for public comment and a provision that requires delegations of more than two persons to appoint just one spokesperson.

Administrators and trustees also recognized Rock-dale Junior High’s eighth grade “A” football team who were the undefeated District 10-3A champions and had a record of 8-0-1 this past fall.

PERSONNEL—Dr. Monzingo said physics teacher Dr. Michael Seabolt was hired.

Dr. Seabolt is the former Marlin ISD superintendent, presiding during an era which saw a great deal of press coverage over various academic issues.

“Dr. Seabolt was hired as a physics teacher having a certificate in composite science. His work in Marlin is not related to the classroom work he is doing for us,” Dr. Monzingo said.

Also hired were technology teacher Justin Fierro at RJH and custodian Dolores Facundo.

Resigning were high school mathematics teacher Robert Lampert, instructional aide Krystal Hill, food service employee Kappel Ramey and custodians Erika Howard, Tomas Gomez, Samira Zabaleta and Eliza Castaneda.
