Rockdale has its first-ever dog park and a crowd of several dozen four-footed, and two footed, enthusiasts came out Saturday morning to see the new facility.
And it’s only the first phase.
City Manager Chris Whittaker said the current facility will eventually become the small-dog park with an adjacent large-dog facility planned for the future.
The dog park is located between the city sewer plant and the animal shelter on Beverly Drive just east of FM 908.
NO COST—Saturday’s grand opening featured free dog adoptions at the shelter and free micro-chipping.
Whittaker said the park has become a reality at no cost to taxpayers and thanked sponsors who contributed materials and labor.
Sponsors of the dog park are Whinstone, Rockdale General Store, Rockdale Pet Adoption Welfare Service (PAWS) and the Rabinowitz family.
Saturday’s “soft opening” of the dog park was a re-scheduling of the event which was originally set for Wednesday, Feb. 12 but was re-scheduled due to the weather.
As at dog parks in larger cities, Rockdale’s features a two-gate entry system to lessen the chances of pets getting away from owners before going inside.
HOURS—City Manager Chris Whittaker said the dog park will be open to the public from sunrise to sunset 365 days a year.
