Monday night’s city council meeting held a surprise for many because they agreed to classify downtown Rockdale as a slum and blighted area. But don’t worry. This has been done before and for a good cause.
By making this declaration the city and Rockdale MDD are now able to apply for grants and other money to help make improvements to the downtown area.
“The classification is just a step in the process,” MDD Economic Director Jim Gibson said.
Mayor Brett Boren also made four proclamations during the meeting which declared April in Rockdale as Fair Housing Month, Earth Day on April 22, Crime Victims’ Rights Week April 23-29 and Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The council also approved a resolution opposing Senate Bill 1751 which affects both Riot and Bitdeer and their ability to sell power back to the power grid during peak usage hours. Representatives from both companies were present.
The council received the annual audit for fiscal year 2021-2022 and received a clean bill of health showing the city has been responsible about paying down debt.
Planning and Zoning Director Doug Williams asked the council for building standards regarding new construction.
