Tears, thoughts from stunning program at THS
Body

It wasn’t real, but it could have been.

That was the impression the “Shattered Dreams” program left during a somber presentation last week at Thorndale High School.

The anti-drunk driving message was the topic during the two days capped off with a realistic looking—and horrific—simulated alcohol-triggered car crash. Thursday afternoon.

With fatalities.

There were tears and gasps as students portrayed victims and real emergency responders and law enforcement personnel responded.

As did a hearse and funeral home personnel.

Following the sirens, shock and sobs, students went to Thorndale Fireman’s Hall where real life drunk-driving crash victim Sean Carter—communicating through an enhanced electronic device—related his experience.

The previous day students visited Scott & White McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple to see a mock trauma scene and tour the morgue.

THS students were pulled out of class every 15 minutes on Thursday to represent the actual amount of students killed in drunk driving incidents each day.

Those students returned to class, clad in makeup and a black T-shirts and could not communicate for the remainder of the school day.
