Milam County Precinct 1 voters have some unfinished business from the March 3 Republican Primary to decide next month and an extended early voting period begins Monday at four locations.
Both Milam Republicans and Democrats will help Texas pick nominees in a couple of district-wide and state-wide races in early voting and also on election day July 14.
Originally, runoff elections from the March primaries were to have been held on May 26, but that date was delayed almost two months due to the COVID-19 situation.
Incumbent Richard “Opey” Watkins and challenger Henry “Hub” Hubnik are facing off for the Precinct position in the GOP primary.
The winner does not face Democratic opposition.
EARLY VOTING— Here are the four early voting locations and dates:
• Patterson Civic Center, Rockdale—Monday (June 29), 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; June 30-July 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; July 6, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; July 7-10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Bea’s Kitchen, Cameron—Monday (June 29), 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; June 30-July 2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; July 6, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; July 7-10, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Thorndale VFW Hall—Monday (June 29), 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; June 30-July 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; July 6, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; July 7-10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Buckholts Community Center—Monday (June 29), 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; June 30-July 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; July 6, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; July 7-10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Any registered Milam voter may cast a ballot in any location. But those who voted in a party primary in March may not vote in the other party’s primary.
CONGRESS—There are a number of statewide and district-wide contests to bedecided in the runoffs.
Milam voters will help decide the general election candidates in both parties for District 17 U. S. Representative.
Pete Sessions and Renee Swann are vying on the Republican ballot while the Democratic candidates are David Anthony Jaramillo and Rick Kennedy.
The winners will face off in November to replace Republican Bill Flores, who is retiring.
STATEWIDE—There are a couple of statewide Democratic ballot runoffs.
Mary “M.J.” Hegar and Royce West are vying for the chance to oppose Republican U. S. Sen. John Cornyn in November.
Democratic candidates for Railroad Commissioner are Roberto “Beto” Alonzo and Chrysta Castañeda.
