Over 130 Rockdale ISD students fanned out over the community Monday morning in the fifth annual local Earth Day observance.

“Additionally, a group of 40 teachers and staff members, along with volunteers from the community, participated,” Dave Melton, event coordinator said.

Melton said 13 new trees were planted, several bridges were repainted and gardens around the RISD Central Office were refurbished.

Monday wasn’t the only part of the 2019 Earth Day observance.

On Saturday, the El Camino Real chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists offered educational presentation and free take-home items at the Rockdale Community Room on North Main.

Also that day, Girl Scout Troops 9603 and 9605 cleaned up the Old City Cemetery off South Main.

Also, First Presbyterian Church volunteers planted pear trees and several shrubs at the church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a landscaping project at the city library, the Kay Theatre has a project and Perry & Perry has a project.

Monday began with breakfast tacos in the RHS gym.

“Again we find ourselves thanking our young people for setting an example,” Melton said.
