Earth Day is here and while some projects are already under way, and while there’s a Saturday event, the majority of the operation will see volunteers spread out through town Monday, cleaning and beautifying.
PROJECTS—Monday’s activities start with a Welcome and send-off for volunteers and breakfast tacos, in the RHS gym, tacos at 8:30 a.m. and send-off at 9.
From there, volunteers will branch out to various locations around the city.
Here’s a list of projects, including some that are already underway, according to Dave Melton, Earth Day coordinator:
• First Presbyterian Church has planted two flowering pear trees and several shrubs at the church.
• Rockdale Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints has a landscaping project at the city library.
• Bridges and overpasses will receive a fresh coat of paint, with labor from Rock-dale High School students and staff.
Labor on the next three projects is by students, staffers and community members:
• Spaces around the Rock-dale ISD Central Administration Building will be refurbished with new plants and mulch. The mini butterfly garden and trees at that location will receive new mulch and annuals.
• An overgrown block-long sidewalk in the 600 block of West Bell will be uncovered and brought back to life.
• Ten to 15 trees will be planted around the elementary, junior high, and high school campuses.
• Miles of Rockdale streets and roadways will be targeted for litter pick-up. Streets are to be announced.
• Perry and Perry Builders has pledged to do a significant project from a list provided by Rockdale City Manager Chris Whitaker.
• The Kay Theater will get a landscaping project completed at the building entrance.
SATURDAY—On Saturday, the El Camino Real chapter of Texas Master Naturalists will offer educational presentations, and free take-home items at the Rock-dale Community Room, 2103 North Main, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Also that day, Girl Scout Troop 9603 and 9605 will clean up the Old City Cemetery.
Between Monday and April 27, aluminum cans may be recycled at special rates at Rockdale Iron & Metals on US 79.
RE-SCHEDULED—Stash Your Trash, the City of Rockdale’s annual spring Trash collection day, has been re-scheduled to May 4. See story, page 2A.
