As Black History Month 2023 comes to a close, a celebration was held at Sumuel Park on Wednesday for Elissa Benford-Roberts’ storyboard project permanently on display showcasing early black businesses in Rockdale.

According to commission member Geri Burnett, “The Milam County Historical Commission encouraged Elissa to apply for our Preservation Grant to complete her project. Her plans were very well received by the commission because there had not been research for a preservation effort like that for Rockdale’s east side. The grant was awarded and the storyboard is now on display.”

Benford-Roberts added, “In honor of Black History, the story board is important now and for future generations to know that there were over 50 vibrant businesses in the area that were black owned, and this board documents the information.”

On hand for the celebration (above) were Milam County Historical Commission members Rita Quinn, Burnett, Joan Ratliff and Benford-Roberts.
