RISD REPORT

The staff at Rockdale Elementary is looking forward to another outstanding school year, and Principal Alesha Eoff has some exciting news and information regarding the plans made for this year:

Rockdale Elementary is ready for an amazing adventure this year. Our theme is “Adventure Awaits”.

We thought that it was perfect because we all know that every day at the elementary level is an adventure.

We have eagerly planned in anticipation of our 2019-2020 school year, and we are all excited and ready for a fresh start and new beginnings.

We have had great success building a strong educational foundation, and we will continue to grow and develop our students so they will have even greater success this year.

An area that is getting a lot of attention in the media and in our schools is the Social/Emotional Learning and needs of today’s students.

HEARTS—We are most enthusiastic about “Capturing Kids Hearts”. Our campus attended this two day training by the Flip Flippen Group in order to address some of social, emotional, and behavioral needs on our campus.

The “Capturing Kids Hearts” process focuses on ways to connect and build relationships with kids.

It involves step-by-step processes that help build connections and get to the heart of the child. Some of the key pieces are centered on how we treat each other including ways we show respect, ways to be better listeners, handling conflicts, building respect, listening, addressing difficult behaviors, and increasing on-task behaviors.

If you stop by our campus, you may hear our teachers using a questioning technique from the training with the following questions:

• What are you doing?

• What are you supposed to be doing?

• Are you doing it?

• What are you going to do about it?

These questions and this program give us a systematic way to build relationships and address behaviors on our campuses.

We know that first we catch the heart of the child, and then the learning can begin.

It has been so exciting to see the students coming into school happy, motivated, and ready to learn.

BREAKFAST—Our campus is providing free breakfast and lunch for all students.

Each and every student that walks into our school will be fed two free meals each day. This is imperative for many reasons, but we all know that if our stomachs are empty, then our brains have a hard time concentrating and learning.

We must have our basic needs met before we can learn and grow the way we should. We are thankful for the opportunity to provide two solid meals to each student every day.
