Rockdale will say goodbye to its winningest football coach ever and to one of its busiest, and most visible, city managers on successive evenings this week.
A come-and-go reception for Jeff Miller is set for 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rockdale High School Rotunda. He is heading to Cypress-Fairbanks High School in suburban Houston.
From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday City Manager Chris Whittaker will be honored with a come-and-go reception at the Patterson Civic Center, 609 Mill. Light refreshments will be served.
COACH—Miller has been head football coach and athletic director at RHS for 14 seasons. He leaves as the winningest coach in Tiger history with 106 victories and his 156 games coached is also first. Miller’s victories include a 2017 state championship. CITY MANAGER—Whittaker has been city manager for just over six years.
He is heading to Angleton as interim city manager and said the job will become permanent.
Whittaker’s tenure has been one of a seachange in Rockdale city government.
He led the effort to address Rockdale’s crumbling water and sewer infrastructure and leaves just after a major funding proposal has been assured by a state agency (see story above).
Rockdale also got a new police station and underwent numerous upgrades in parks and city government. A 25-year Army veteran, he was speaker for a number of veterans’ observances.
FINAL DAYS—Miller’s final day in the Rockdale ISD will be Friday.
Whittaker’s final day at the city will be March 13.
