A 36-year-old Needham, Alabama, man became the Rockdale area’s third highway fatality in just under two months before dawn on Monday.
According to the Department of Public Safety, Douglas Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene, US 79 in front of Milano Cefco, after the 3:30 a.m. accident.
Investigators said Brooks was westbound driving a 2005 GMC pickup and towing a flatbed trailer when he drifted off the road, overcorrected and was in collision with a 2017 Ken-worth 18-wheeler.
The eastbound truck rig, driven by 46-year-old Phillip Matchett of Cameron, was making a left turn into a parking lot. Matchett was not hurt, according to the DPS.
A 51-year-old Rock-dale man died in a wreck on FM 1712 just north of the Rockdale city limits on March 6.
Four weeks later, on April 5, a 63-year-old Bryan man was killed in an accident just west of Milano on US 79.
