Walt Cook recently presented Rev. Heath Dewrell of St. Thomas Episcopal Church a certificate of authenticity and a f lag. The flag given to Heath was carried by Avalon, the first US Air Forces emotional support dog, while carrying out her duties on Price Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
Most Military working Dogs are trained to detect bombs and/or attack the enemy. Avalon is trained to aid those serving in conf licts. She offers a nice reprieve from the stress of deployment and many service members are grateful for her.
Her handler, Lt. Col. Christina Pittman, was Cook’s Chaplain while he was in Saudi Arabia with the Army Reserves.
Cook gave Rev. Dewrell the flag because the reverend supported Cook during his time serving and is thankful for the services provided by the church.
