Students in two Milam County schools are back in classes after unexpected “vacations” due to flu absences.

Thorndale ISD students were back on Monday and classes in the Buckholts ISD resumed Tuesday.

It was business as usual in Rockdale and other area districts.

Rockdale ISD Supt. Denise Monzingo told The Reporter the RISD’s attendance rate late last week was 94.8-percent, nothing like the rates which forced the nearby districts to shut down briefly.

“We are monitoring daily,” she said.

In Thorndale, Supt. Adam Ivy noted at one point 80 students were absent, 15 percent of the TISD’s enrollment.

Buckholts ISD dismissed classes early on Thursday and also canceled classes Friday and Monday.

Both districts said their campuses were cleaned thoroughly before students went back to school.

Dr. Monzingo said Rock-dale ISD was also disinfecting facilities.

Ivy said a teacher work day Feb. 14 in the Thorndale ISD is now being converted into a class day to make up one of the days missed by students last week.

“We have plenty of minutes available to adjust for the other two days but we may further adjust the calendar if needed,” he said.

The problems of absenteeism due to flu and flu-like illnesses hasn’t been restricted to Milam County.

Classes in the Teague and Fairfield ISDs were also canceled last week due to similar concerns.
