But stay inside your vehicles

Just about every public event in the area has been canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but one that hasn’t is the Central Texas Food Bank’s first Thursday surplus food distribution in the KC Hall parking lot.

Time is 9 to 11 a.m.

It won’t look like the previous ones, however. Those picking up food from the mobile vehicles will be required to stay inside their vehicles, according to Pam Warren chair of Rockdale Christian Services.

“That is in order to maintain social distancing,” she said.

Here’s how it will work Thursday morning:

• Unlike previous distributions, numbers will not be issued. Orders of distribution will be determined on where you are parked.

• For the line vehicles must drive around the back of the building, beginning at the hall’s southeastern corner, the one nearest the church. (Opposite the truck).

• Drive completely around the building, emerging, facing south, near the truck

• Volunteers will then come to your vehicle—maintaining a safe distance—to gather your information.

• At the distribution point, volunteers will place a box of food in your trunk or truck bed. Everyone will stay in their vehicles.

“For this to work, please have your trunk cleared out enough for a large box of food to fit,” Warren said.

She added that if there are multiple families in the vehicle, or if you are proxy for multiple families, please make sure there is enough room in your trunk for all the boxes.”

Warren said volunteers will not enter vehicles to hand off food.

“Once you are in the distribution area, do not leave your vehicle,” she added.

Distribution officials cautioned the KC Hall will not be open during the event, therefore restroom facilities will be not be available.

That kind of drive-through distribution will be the norm for future food giveaways at the KC Hall.

They remain on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
