Darral Walker, whose election as mayor in 1974, ushered in a new era of Rockdale city government, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, at his Rock-dale home.

Memorial services were held Saturday at St. John’s United Methodist Church. Obituary, page 4D.

Walker was elected Rock-dale mayor in 1974, serving one term.

He continued to be active in city government.

Walker, along with the late Linwood and Pauline Mehaffey, was instrumental in acquiring the estate of Dr. George Patterson of Los Angeles.

That estate provided for the construction of Rock-dale’s first permanent library, the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library, named for Dr. Patterson’s mother. It also provided for a major expansion and upgrade of that library.

The Patterson Estate also funded the city’s civic center and its expansion. The center is named for Dr. Patterson.
