The Milam County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Bastrop Sheriff’s Office raided a location in the 400 block of Cypress Trail Loop just west of the Rockdale city limits Tuesday afternoon, according to Sheriff Chris White.
“Investigators confirmed that vehicles matching ones reported stolen from Lee County were visible from the roadway,” White said With that information deputies converged on the location.
He said numerous persons ran as deputies approached from the front of house and driveway but Milam deputies emerged from the wooded area behind the location and intercepted the fleeing suspects.
White said seven subjects were detained and four of those arrested for the following charges.
• Bryan Scott Lopez, 32, Rockdale, warrant for bond forfeiture.
• Carl Alan Groendes, 46, Caldwell, possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine) less than one gram.
• Zachary David Burgess, 32, Rockdale, theft of property.
• Ellen Marie Morriss, age and residence not available Wednesday morning, theft of property.
White said the three males were booked into the Milam County Jail with Morriss taken to Lee County Jail in Giddings.
He said additional charges are pending completion of the investigation in Milam, Bastrop and Lee Counties.
“Two stolen trucks were recovered, another truck and motorcycle were seized pending confirmation of whether the vehicles are stolen. That confirmation could not be concluded at the scene,” White said.
He said several vehicle parts, which had been removed from one of the stolen trucks, were also recovered.
“It appeared that the suspects were converting one of the trucks into a tow-truck which investigators believed would allow them to further their criminal activities in stealing additional vehicles,” White said.
The stolen vehicles were placed into the Milam County Sheriff’s Office impound yard pending return to their owners, he said.
