Was one of your new year’s resolutions to recycle more? If you’ve fallen behind on that resolution, April is the perfect month to get started because April has a lot of opportunities for you to get on the recycling bandwagon.

And Earth Day is on Friday, April 22.

According to Rockdale Mayor John King, “Rockdale maintains a recycle roll-off at the Mill Street water treatment plant to the south of the water tower. We accept cardboard, paper, certain glass and plastics and aluminum. We also have two free trash events each year with a recycling container at each of these events. This year we are implementing two events that will include curbside pickup of items that are not normally put into the trash containers.”

The recycling container is located at the City Yard at 301 Mill Avenue. These are the things you can recycle there: aluminum cans, glass jars and bottles (no light bulbs, windows or mirrors); tin, steel or aerosol cans; plastic tubs, jars and trays, plastic bottles and all plastics marked #1 to #7.

Things they do not take include plastic bags, wet paper, yard waste and wood (there are pickup days for that), Styrofoam, pizza boxes (the oils and recycling machines do not work together), electronics, ceramics or dishes, food, stable matter, motor oil containers, hazardous waste such as batteries (keep reading to find out where to get rid of these items), furniture and appliances.

A countywide Hazardous Waste Cleanup Day will be held in Thorndale on Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Milam County Precinct 4 building located at 500 US 79.

Items accepted that day will include used oil and petroleum products, antifreeze, household cleaners, acids and other chemicals, batteries and fluorescent bulbs. They will not be accepting fire alarms, smoke detectors, explosives, medical waste like needles or medications, large appliances, pressurized containers or construction debris.

So there’s no time like the present to go through your house while spring cleaning and get these items discarded properly.

Stash Your Trash Day will be Saturday, April 23 at Fair Park from 8 a.m. to noon. You must bring your drivers license and water bill to be able to get rid of your miscellaneous household items like old furniture, mattresses and tree limbs.

They will not accept tires or motor oil that day.

If you need help getting your trash to Fair Park call 512-446-2511.

Let’s all participate in making our city and our homes cleaner and safer by getting rid of these items.
