Rockdale student athletes were on the east side, the west side and even out of town Saturday morning to help clean up after the Jan. 10 snowfall that covered Milam County.
Rockdale High School head football coach Jacob Campsey put together the cleanup effort that had the students clearing limb-strewn yards for free.
“After all that snow on Sunday, I looked out with my wife on our 20 acres and saw all the branches down and thought about others that might need help cleaning up,” Campsey said.
“I thought this would be a good opportunity for our kids to go to work and help other people out,” he said. “It was a no-brainer to get the kids to go help out.
“I told them, ‘Hey, guys, we have the opportunity to go help out our community,” he said. “I had 28 kids volunteer.”
And help out they did. Cars and trucks carrying the youngsters traveled on three routes that covered the east and west ends of town and a stop out in Minerva.
“The thing that is important to me is service to others. The community gives us great support in what we do and this is a great chance for us to give back,” he said.
Hannah Delz, a member of the track team, was one of the students who gave up her Saturday morning off to help out
She was happy to see everyone come out to help in the effort, she said.
“It is great to see them come together to show how we work as a team,” she said. “We work well together on sports teams and we also work well in service to the community.”
