There’s a long way to go, but the news out of Portland, Oregon—where Milam County Sheriff David Greene is attempting to recover from a heart attack—is better than might have been hoped for just a week ago.

Chief Deputy Chris White said physicians have removed an impella pump from Green’s heart.

“It is pumping on its own,” White said. “That’s a good step forward.”

An impella pump is a medical device used for temporary support in persons with depressed heart functions.

White said that while physicians worked after removal to deal with an infection, Greene did show signs of response.

The 10-year sheriff remains in a medically-induced coma in a cardiac unit. He was in Oregon on vacation visiting family.

“To me this is an answer to prayer,” White said.

The Greene family continues to ask well-wishers to send words of comfort, support or fun memories to be communicated to the recovering sheriff.

Those can be sent to with David Greene or Janell Greene’s Facebook pages.

“I know the family appreciates all the wonderful, heartfelt support from Milam County,” White said.
