On Monday at 12:59 p.m., the Rockdale Police Department was notified by Rockdale High School faculty that a firearm had been discovered in a High School student’s backpack after receiving an anonymous tip through the RISD “Quick tip” program.
RISD staff secured the firearm and notified the Rockdale Police Department. The suspect in question fled from school grounds prior to law enforcement’s arrival.
Rockdale Police Officers were able to quickly locate and arrest the suspect, a 15-year-old juvenile, for possessing a firearm in a gun-free school zone, a third degree felony. The juvenile suspect was placed into the Rockdale Regional Juvenile Justice Center pending a detention hearing to be held later this week.
Subsequent investigation revealed the juvenile suspect was carrying the firearm for protection after receiving perceived threats the previous day.
