Towards the end of last month, I had a chance to visit Mexico for the first time in my life. The plan was to hang out in Mexico City before lying on the beach for the rest of my trip in Oaxaca, near Puerto Escondido. I didn’t want to deal with the crowds of Cancun, but after a hectic spring, I still didn’t want to do much besides relax.

My plane from Puerto Escondido kept getting delayed, so while waiting, I bummed Wi-Fi from a restaurant in my terminal and was able to see the area forecast on Google. Noticing that even if my flight did make it there, I’d probably be inside the entire time due to rainfall from Tropical Storm Celia.

I looked at the weather in a place called San Miguel de Allende (a four-hour ride north of Mexico City) after that. The sky was supposed to be clear and the temperature was supposed to stay between 55-80 degrees. I booked a place, left the airport right away and had a great time in what was one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever been to. I didn’t book any tours, I just kind of woke up and played every day by ear, which is the best way to do trips, in my opinion.

I was supposed to fly home from Mexico City, but due to very bad rain and not wanting to get stuck for a week, I looked for cities I could enjoy before going home and stumbled upon Monterrey, a seven-and-a-half hour drive from Rockdale (No, I didn’t drive home.). Monterrey was even hotter than Texas, but had beautiful mountains and a lot of familiarity. I discussed the differences between Texas HEB and Mexican HEB with almost every person I hung out with there and still bond with people from Monterrey about how it’s too hot to go outside right now.

Mexico is a grand place with amazing food, amazing views and even better people. For those who haven’t been, I highly recommend checking out what it has to offer and to see more than just Cancun and Tulum.
