The clinician is alway in – during operating hours anyway.
The new health unit called the Texas A&M-OnMed Health Care Station will be operational starting Thursday, according to information from the Texas A&M Health Science Center.
The station is located in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Department in Cameron and will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will also be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays
There are no appointments necessary, just go by the sheriff’s office at 512 North Jefferson and walk into the unit.
But if the unit is occupied, just have a seat on the new furniture in the lobby and wait for your turn.
The station is easy to operate, she said.
“It is a touchscreen. You press start and a live person will talk to you and guide you through the process,” said Dr. Joy Alonzo, who is a faculty member at Texas A&M Heath Science Center in College Station. “There is a flat fee of $65 per visit.”
At some point a nurse practitioner will come on and talk to you about why you are visiting the station.
“You can take your blood pressure while there. There is a stethoscope that the nurse will help you use,” she said.
The station is equipped to weigh visitors and a number of other routine operations, such as checking to see why your throat is sore.
“You hold a wand and open your mouth and the nurse practitioner will say over to the right. She can see right down your throat,” Alonzo said.
“It’s more personal than a Zoom call,” she said.
“One person at a demonstration felt like it was talking to a real person. ‘I felt like I wanted to back up, because I felt like I was in her space,’ he said,” Alonzo related.
In this day of COVID-19, the unit is equipped to clean itself after every use.
“It self locks and cleans with high caliber ultraviolet-light radiation,” she said.
Both Texas A&M and OnMed monitor the condition of the station.
“The machine provides data on all the devices and capabilities at all times,” she said.
