Friday fatality at Tiger Field

A 42-year-old construction worker collapsed at the new Tiger Field worksite Friday afternoon and later died, an incident said to be heat related, according to Police Chief Thomas Harris.

Harris identified the deceased worker as Jose Refugio Estrada Garcia, believed to be a Mexican national.

Harris said Ofc. Nathan Law and an American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance crew were notified at 4:36 p.m. of what was initially believed to be a construction accident.

“We at first thought the incident was a fall,” Harris said. “But it was not.”

Harris said a medical helicopter was summoned but the AMR ambulance had already departed for Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Temple, by the time the chopper arrived.

“Mr. Garcia had a very weak heartbeat when the ambulance left, but he was later pronounced dead,” Harris said.

“The Occupational, Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the incident as heat related,” Harris said.

Friday’s high temperature was 105 degrees, according to the U.S. Weather Service thermometer stationed at KRXT-FM.
