Ask any 7-year-old what they want to be when they grow up, and there are generally no limits to the answers. Superheroes, professional sports players, doctors, lawyers, firefighters, astronauts are all common responses.
Just a few years later, sometimes as early as 10 years old, student perceptions about industries begin to form.
By the age of 14 many of those perceptions remain unchanged throughout high school and beyond.
So many elements play a role in the choices that students make when it comes to careers.
Circumstances outside the control of the student play a large role, including gender and socioeconomic status, and this has been shown to have a greater influence than even academic performance.
However, these influences can be reduced with the proper career exploration and guidance from the school district. Rockdale ISD utilizes a College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) plan that is specific to preparing students at each grade level for a lifetime of learning and success at the postsecondary level.
Beginning in elementary school, students are introduced to careers in different clusters to open their areas to a wider variety of choices.
