Rockdale Junior High is excited about the progress our students are making in year two implementation of our campuswide intervention and support services, HERO K-12.

We are consistently utilizing HERO to yield greater impacts on student behavior in the classroom and across the campus.

In the 2019-20 school year, Rockdale Junior High recognized an average of 460 positive behaviors per student, striving to engage in positive and meaningful interactions with all students.

HERO uses a point system through a digital platform to promote positive behavior and track infractions, all while engaging parents with automated email alerts for repeated behavior requiring immediate intervention.

During lunches, administration provides a HERO “store” in which students are able to redeem points collected for positive behavior documented by staff throughout the school day.

Popular incentives included ice cream coupons, homework passes, raffles for “secret” prizes, lunch outside, coupons for concession items, and peer affirmations delivered by administration. The positive effects on cam

The positive effects on campus climate are evident across the campus and supported by campus data over the last three years.

When reviewing student discipline data in 2018 for the first six weeks, campus staff submitted over 80 office referrals.

In our first year of implementation in 2019, the number of referrals decreased to 63.

This year, in our second year of implementation, the number of office referrals has decreased by 71 percent to just 23.

In addition to the campus-wide implementation of HERO K-12, teachers have received extensive training and professional development in systematic procedures for behavior management through CHAMPS.

The overall goal of CHAMPS classroom management system is to develop an instructional structure in which students are responsible, motivated, and highly engaged in the specific task at hand.

More specifically, the teacher’s goal is to teach students directly how to be successful in specific class situations.

For each classroom activity, teachers provide explicit instruction on appropriate Conversation level, how students can receive Help for each Activity, appropriate Movement based on that activity, and expectations for Participation which when combined, lead to student Success.

Collectively, Rockdale Junior High is making big changes and seeing huge improvements in overall student behavior which we believe will ultimately lead to academic success for every student in the 2020-21 school year.
