A Rockdale barbecue trailer, open less than one year near the Cameron-Wilcox (US 79-FM 487) intersection, has joined a select group.

This week, Brett’s Backyard Barbecue, owned and operated by Brett Boren, was named No. 20 in an article entitled “The Top 25 Best New Barbecue Joints in Texas” by Texas Monthly magazine.

The story, by TM Barbecue Editor Daniel Vaughn—yes, the magazine has one, this is Texas—is in the issue which went to online subscribers Monday and hits the newsstands Thursday.

Making a Texas Monthly list is a very big deal. The magazine can create legends and has done so on Rockdale’s back doorstep. The magazine’s ranking of Snow’s Barbecue in Lexington catapulted that establishment to worldwide fame.

Vaughn’s criteria for making the “best new joints” list was that the establishment must have a permanent address and regular hours.

After paying homage to the closing of Luminant and Little River Health Care, Vaughn writes:

“...the truck’s location, right on U.S. 79, in the center of town, seems to be working for it, judging from the happy customers filling up the picnic tables on a Saturday.

“In the works are a stage for live music and a series of gardens to grow ingredients. There’s nothing to avoid on the menu of well-smoked barbecue, but I find myself drawn to the bevy of sausages. An all-beef variety brings the Texas barbecue flavor; a little heat comes with the jalapeño link; and the pico de gallo sausage is like a smoked version of chorizo. Add a Nutter Butter banana pudding for dessert.”

Boren is planning a “celebration” of the rating Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with live music and a bar.—M.B.
