Rockdale’s annual homecoming will have a new look when homecomers gather June 9 at the Patterson Center.

Barbara Gross, Rockdale Homecoming Association president, said the group wants to emphasize the annual event is not just for graduates of Rockdale High School, but for all current and previous resdents of Rockdale.

“In past years, a decision was made to honor the RHS graduating class from 50 years ago,” she said. “In retrospect, this action probably caused the notion that homecoming was mostly for RHS grads. That’s not true.”

“Ultimately the attendance began to falter and participation has now dwindled to less than 100,” Gross said.

She noted the location has now changed from the KC Hall to the Patterson Center, as a result of the declining attendance.

“This year we are excited to add a new feature and hope it will enhance attendance,” she said.

“Honoree on June 9 will be The Rockdale Reporter with its owners and dedicated staff. The Cooke Family has led this award winning and well respected weekly community newspaper for four generations and has contributed so much to the community,” Gross said.

John Esten Cooke purchased the newspaper in 1911 and was followed as publisher by son W. H. Cooke, grandson J. W. (Bill) Cooke and currently great grandson Ken Cooke and wife Christine Granados.

Dr. Lucile Estell said the event will begin with coffee, donuts and fellowship. The annual business meeting will be held around noon.

She said officers of the Rockdale Homecoming Association will serve a fried chicken lunch.

Charge will be $12 per person.

“Plan now to attend this exciting event. Celebrate Rockdale and honor the Cooke family for their long and devoted service to this community,” Gross said.
