Rockdale Homecoming Association is ready to host the 88th gathering of all current and previous citizens and businesses of Rockdale on June 12 at the Patterson Civic Center.

The history of Rockdale Homecoming started 88 years ago when a group of Rockdale friends and neighbors gathered at Fair Park with their picnic lunches, homemade cakes and pies, watermelons and iced tea on quilts spread under the beautiful oak trees.

Visiting was a relaxing time for sharing family happenings, sharing stories and reminiscing.

These type of gatherings continued each year until the attendance grew enough to move into the New Salem Home Demonstration Club building at Fair Park.

“Those years were highlighted by the auction of desserts baked by Ruby Holliman and Mary Brannon. During this time period a decision was made to honor the RHS graduating class from 50 years ago and tables were set for other years also,” according to Rockdale Homecoming Association President Deborah Currey.

“The association wants to emphasize that our annual gathering is intended to include all current and previous citizens, classmates and businesses of Rockdale,” she added.

This year’s honorees are Rainbow Courts and the McKinney family. Founded in 1918, Rainbow Courts is now a Recorded Historic Landmark which is the highest historic recognition awarded by the State of Texas. And is still family owned and operated.

The RHS Class of 1972 will also be honored.

This year’s meal will be catered by A Touch of Elegance Catering and will include a green salad, roasted pork loin, roasted seasonal vegetables, roasted potatoes, homemade rolls, tea and water and assorted cakes.

Doors open at 9 a.m. for complimentary coffee and donuts.

Registration is $15 and meal ticket RSVPs are due by May 22. There is a registration form in this week’s Reporter and one can also be picked up at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce or The Rockdale Reporter.
