The Rockdale Hospital District’s (RHD) tax rate will remain at 6.5 cents for another year.

Karolyn Puccio, hospital board president, told The Reporter, that the board met on Friday and decided not to increase the tax rate.

“At our board meeting today, we voted NOT to increase the tax rate for RHD,” she said

The hospital district board will meet at 12-noon Monday, Aug. 31, in Suite A of the former Richards Memorial Hospital to adopt the proposed tax rate.

“As with any of our board meetings, the public is invited to attend and make comments,” she said.

The RHD had originally said, in a 16.9-cent rate would be necessary to support the CHI St. Joseph-HealthPoint Clinic, but decided one year ago to set a lower rate using reserve funds.

At the time board members said the 6.5-cent rate would only support the clinic’s operations for three years, using money saved by the district over the years.

The district did not get a much hoped-for grant which would have further reduced taxes.

In November, voters will go to the polls to decide whether to expand the hospital district boundaries to those of the Rockdale Independent School District.

If successful that change should lessen the tax burden on city residents.
