Site visit eyed ‘soon as it’s safe to meet again’

Nothing is certain yet but careful observers have noticed new activity at a former clinic building on the campus of what was once Rockdale’s Richards Memorial Hospital.

It’s “Suite A,” the outbuilding nearest to Meadow Drive and there is, indeed, activity at a building which used to house one of the clinics on the RHS campus.

“We are making repairs,” Karolyn Puccio, president of the Rockdale Hospital Board, told The Reporter.

She said the roof on that building is being replaced, there are also floor repairs ongoing and a tree which was compromising the building’s roof was taken down.

RMH’s Suite B became a HealthPoint-CHI St. Joseph’s clinic last year and there’s now some hope a new use could be found for Suite A.

“As soon as it is safe to meet again, St. Joseph’s is coming for a site visit to look at Suite A in order to bring in some specialists,” she said.

“We have had to postpone their site visit twice,” she added.

Puccio said St. Joseph’s is also interested in looking at meeting rooms in hopes of sponsoring some health seminars and other activities.

“They also want to do a health fair,” she continued. “Of course all these will be dependent on when we can safely meet again.”

Puccio said the hospital district has not heard any more from the Texas National Guard which visited RMH on April 29 to see if it could be used for non-COVID-19 patients in the event the Texas hospital system became overwhelmed in pandemic patients.
