The City of Rockdale wants input from the public on house numbers in a 6 p.m. Thursday town hall at the city library.
Rockdale is contemplating its first mandatory house numbering system, first discussed in a city council session earlier this year.
City Manager Chris Whittaker said the draft numbering resolution calls for six-inch reflective numbers to be placed at all residences within the city.
“We can be flexible on that,” he said. “We’d like to hear from the public on what they think.”
He noted many residences already have four-inch numbers. At the council session, member discussed the location of numbers, whether they should be required on the house, or would curbside or mailbox numbers satisfy the requirement.
“Those are the kinds of things we are going to have to work out,” he said.
Whittaker said requiring numbers is an effort to assist first responders, firefighters and police.
At the council meeting it was pointed out that none of the ambulance personnel serving Rockdale are natives of the city.
“There are a number of ways we could go,” Whittaker said. “It’s been suggested that the 4-inch numbers ahead on many houses be ‘grandfathered in’ under the new requirement.”
“Bottom line is that some kind of numbering system is in the works and this is the time for input,” he said.
