Henry “Hub” Hubnik was elected Precinct 1 Milam County Commissioner Tuesday as the county completed voting in the long-delayed Republican and Democratic Primary Elections.
Hubnik polled 479 votes to 336 for incumbent Richard “Opey” Watkins in the Milam GOP runoff. There is no Democratic Party opposition in the November general election.
Hubnik led Watkins 577-456 in the March primary. Ricky McCall, polled 147.
EARLY VOTING—A total of 1,554 persons—1,215 Republicans and 339 Democrats— voted early in both primaries. More early votes were cast than on election day.
At Rockdale’s Patterson Civic Center, 195 Republicans and 59 Democrats voted early.
STATE RACES—Milam County went with the winners, statewide and congressional district-wide, in both parties.
The District 17 Congressional race is set for November. It will be Republican Pete Sessions and Democrat Rick Kennedy vying to replace Republican Bill Flores, who is retiring.
Milam voters favored Sessions over Renee Swann 958-822 and Kennedy over David Anthony Jaramillo 261-173.
Democrats picked M. J. Hegar to challenge incumbent Republican U. S. Sen. John Cornyn in November. Milam voters also favored Hegar, who drew 307 votes to 134 for Royce West.
In the Democratic runoff for railroad commissioner, Milam voters went with Chrysta Castañeda, the winner state-wide. She polled 217 votes to 213 for Roberto R. “Beto” Alonzo.
Castañeda now faces Republican Jim Wright in November.
