It could be the start of the long-awaited “big one” at the former Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations.

County Judge Steve \oung told The Reporter he has visited with representatives of a planned approximately 10,000-acre solar farm for the site, which has been on the market several years.

There’s more good news. \oung said he believes the solar farm will be used “to power a large company.”

There aren’t any more details available at this point. \oung told county commissioners about the solar project at their most recent session.

Milam County has acquired a reputation as a worldwide solar-power leader with several projects underway.

WATER—\oung said he has known since last April something major was about to happen but that he does not know the name of the major company which would use the power from a solar firm.

“It would all be just guess work on my part,” he said.

There was a major hint something was in the works last June when Michael Irlbeck, representing EPCOR XSA appeared before the Rockdale City Council to put in a bid to sell water from an unnamed project at Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations.

Irlbeck told The Reporter at that time he could not reveal the name of the possible tenant or even confirm that negotiations were underway for the aluminum company to sell or lease part of the 32,000-acre “Sand-ow Lakes Ranch” property, which has formally been on the market for over three years.

‘HOME STRETCH’—

Last October Bernard Xechtritz, founder of Icon Global Group which listed the property, told B loom b erg .c om : “We have turned the corner and we’re on the home stretch to closing a deal” and “We have a good solid group of buyers who will take the whole thing.”
